What do you need to know about French bulldogs?
Often referred to as Frenchies, these adorable canines have risen in the rankings of most popular dog breeds in recent years, thanks to their loveable nature and ability to make great companions.
These dogs might be small, but they have a big personality, winning the hearts of pet owners everywhere. Unfortunately, their adorable squishy faces and cute bat ears can lead to serious medical conditions, affecting their quality of life.
French bulldogs can live between 12-14 years when they're happy and healthy, but they are genetically predisposed to various health issues that can drastically reduce their lifespan.
If your Frenchie develops chronic problems while they're still young, they can set you back a small fortune. That's why you may want to consider protecting your pet with insurance from the moment they enter your life.
Quick facts about French bulldogs
Lifespan: 11-14 years
Size: 11-12 inches (28-30 cm)
Weight: 12.5-13 kg
Colours: White, cream, brindle, fawn or a mixture of these
Appearance: Compact, squashed face and bat ears
Personality: Affectionate, energetic and outgoing
Exercise: At least 60 minutes a day
Do you need French bulldog insurance?
Your Frenchie relies on you for just about everything – meals, exercise and attention – so as a responsible pet parent, it's your job to make sure he or she enjoys the happy and healthy life they deserve.
So why is an insurance policy so important for your French bulldog?
Medical conditions can cost a lot to treat
This sensitive breed is prone to a host of health conditions, some of which might require major surgery. Over time, the cost of vet bills and special treatment can soon pile up, especially if your French bulldog suffers from ongoing conditions.
With a pet insurance plan in place, you can avoid the worry that comes with unexpected medical bills and make sure your Frenchie gets the care it needs to get back to its best.
If your Frenchie develops a medical concern and needs emergency treatment, the last thing you want to worry about is how you are going to pay for their vet bills. With lifetime pet insurance from Purely Pets, we'll sort out the finances with a vet of your choice, so your poorly pup can get immediate help.
Cover your French bulldog before a condition develops
This popular breed can develop medical conditions at any time. If your dog falls ill and isn't insured, it will be difficult to find a policy that provides cover for your pet. Even if you do manage to get French bulldog insurance, it's unlikely that pre-existing conditions will be covered.
The only way to avoid this difficult situation is to take out pet insurance when your dog is healthy. At Purely Pets, we can protect French bulldog puppies from just 8 weeks old and have no upper limit for senior pets.

What are the different types of dog insurance?
Dog insurance for your Frenchie comes in a variety of levels, but what do they actually mean? Here's a breakdown of the jargon:
- Lifetime pet insurance: For ongoing protection throughout your pet's lifetime, choose the most comprehensive cover available. Every year, we cover your pet for a certain amount and reinstate it after 12 months.
- Maximum benefit dog insurance: This plan covers each health issue and accident up to a specific figure, after which your pet is no longer protected.
- Time-limited cover: This works similarly to maximum benefit insurance but covers the costs for a specified period rather than amount.
- Accident-only French bulldog insurance: As the most basic pet insurance policy type, this one only covers the costs of injury from accidents. If your French bulldog falls ill, it's up to you to pick up the bill.
At Purely Pets, we believe every Frenchie deserves the best protection, which is why we only offer lifetime plans. To choose from our 15 levels of cover, contact our helpful team today.
What's not covered by French bulldog insurance?
Whichever level of cover you choose for your four-legged friend, there are always a few exclusions. These usually include routine or regular treatments like:
- Vaccinations
- Microchipping
- Flea and worming treatments
- Neutering and spaying
- Grooming and other non-emergency care
- Cosmetic procedures
- Pre-existing health issues
- Illness or accidents during the initial waiting period
If you would like help paying for non-emergency care for your French bulldog, it's worth speaking to your vet about a pet health plan. These schemes spread the costs across a year, making it more manageable for French bulldog owners to provide their pooch with everything it needs.

Most common health issues in French bulldogs
Your French bulldog's big ears and scrunched up face might look irresistible, but they can also put your Frenchie at risk of certain health conditions.
The most common medical concerns French bulldogs are prone to are:
Skin conditions
The French bulldog is a sensitive breed and genetically predisposed to a number of skin disorders, including allergies. Your canine companion could experience dermatitis (skin inflammation) due to a number of causes:
- Seasonal allergies
- Food allergies
- Flea bites
- Washing powders and other products
Allergies can't be cured but are usually manageable with the right care. Speak to your vet about your Frenchie's skin and they'll either prescribe treatment or provide a specialist referral for further appointments and tests.
Breathing difficulties
Similarly to other dogs with flat faces, French bulldogs commonly experience breathing problems like brachycephalic obstructive airway syndrome (BOAS).
Their facial structure causes tissue at the back of their nose and throat to squash. There are a few ways you can help manage your four-legged friend's breathing issues:
- Avoid going out in very hot weather
- Use a harness rather than a collar
- Only go out for short periods
Eye issues
French bulldog's flat faces also mean their eyes are more exposed, putting them at greater risk of infection (although they do have a handy third eyelid to provide extra protection).
Corneal ulcers and cherry eye are both common in Frenchies and require an immediate trip to your veterinarian.
Ear infections
Those big ears are one of the most endearing characteristics of your French bulldog, but are also a source of many medical concerns, often causing pain in your poor pooch.
They have a narrow ear canal but wide entry, meaning debris and germs can easily get inside and start an infection. Keep an eye out for:
- Pus-like discharge
- Head shaking
- Redness and swelling
- Itchy, painful ears
- Scabs and crusting around the ear
As soon as you spot the signs, get them to the vet. Antibiotics are usually enough to help your dog recover, but recurrent cases might need surgery.
Back, neck and spine issues
Frenchies have a short stature, which unfortunately means they're at risk of skeletal issues like hip dysplasia and intervertebral disc disease. Watch your French bulldog for signs of weakness, limping and becoming less active than normal.
Treatment for these conditions often includes surgery, which can be very costly without an insurance plan in place.
Caring for your French bulldog
French bulldogs need plenty of love and care to live each day to the fullest. As a responsible pet parent, it's up to you to make sure they have everything they need. Need some quick tips?
Food and nutrition
You are what you eat, and it's the same for your four-legged family member! Feed your puppy a specially formulated meal 3-4 times a day, reducing this to twice a day when they switch to adult dog food.
Always opt for a high-quality product to make sure it meets your French bulldog's nutritional needs and weigh out each portion. If your dog becomes over or underweight, it's much more likely to develop medical issues.
Grooming
Just because French bulldogs have short hair that doesn't mean you can skip grooming sessions. For a clean and shiny coat, give them a bath every couple of months and brush their fur every week or two. Bathing them more often can cause dry skin.
You'll also need to keep an eye on their paws and pads in both hot and cold weather and make sure their nails don't grow too long – they can cause pain if they start to dig in. Not confident in your nail trimming skills? Your vet can help.
Training
If you're hoping to win any rosettes at the next doggy competition, you've got quite a bit of work ahead. French bulldogs are utterly adorable, but their stubbornness can make training tough.
Get to know your dog well to understand what works best for you both. Keep plenty of treats to hand, as most Frenchies can easily be swayed to perform when there's food involved.
If you're finding it challenging to get even the most basic of skills down, don't hesitate in getting professional help. Check out our videos with Clinical Animal Behaviourist Rosie Bescoby to get some expert training tips.
Exercise
Frenchies might have small legs, but they need a decent amount of exercise every day – about 60 minutes is enough.
These dogs prefer shorter walks, so split the time into various small sessions throughout the day. Their common health problems include breathing trouble, so if they go out for too long or when it's very hot, they can start to suffer.
Some of their favourite games include tug of war and fetch, which you can also play indoors on chilly days to keep them active.

Along with other flat-faced breeds like pugs, French bulldogs have a low life expectancy compared to other canines. It's most likely due to their increased risk of breathing issues, skin infections and other common health problems.
Insuring them from the moment they become part of your family means you can get them the care they need for a happy and healthy life.
Yes, compared to many other pedigree dogs, French bulldogs are quite high risk because of the various predisposed medical concerns they face.
French bulldogs can cost a bit more than others breeds to insure, but the exact amount you pay will depend on things like:
- The type of policy you choose
- How much protection you need
- How old they are
- How healthy it is
- Whether it's been spayed or neutered
- Where you live
- The amount of excess you choose to pay
At Purely Pets, we only offer lifetime plans for your French bulldog to get the best protection. Choose from 15 levels of insurance to find one that fits your needs and budget.
If the cost of insuring your French bulldog is making you think twice about getting protection, there are a few ways you can save on your premiums:

French bulldog owners want only the best for their four-legged friends. A lifetime insurance policy provides ongoing protection against health issues and injury year after year, making it the most comprehensive cover and best option for your pup.
There are no limits to how many injuries and illnesses you claim for, as long as they apply to your policy and don't exceed the annual monetary limit of your plan.
Despite their name, Frenchies were first bred to be lap dogs in England. They were created as small versions of the British bulldog and made excellent companion dogs.
They joined English lacemakers on visits to France, where they soon picked up their new moniker and became the breed we now know and love.
Yes! Frenchies love being around people and they can suffer from separation anxiety if left alone too long. Their affectionate and playful personality means they'll get along with everyone, from toddlers to grandparents, and they're also extremely loyal to their owners.
As long as you spend some time training your Frenchie (especially when they're young), they are usually well behaved. It's important you get to know your four-legged friend well to spot any signs of behavioural problems and get professional help before they get any bad habits.
Like all canines, French bulldogs bark, but they aren't known for excessive barking. If yours does start to be more vocal, it might be because something's making them excited or nervous.
If you're looking for a dog that doesn't leave hairs everywhere they go, French bulldogs are a great choice. To minimise shedding, bathe them every couple of months and brush their fur once a week or two.
